Sitting Pretty - Call for Artists

by Calgary Downtown Association

Please read before submitting your application:

The Calgary Downtown Association (CDA) is inviting local artists and artist teams to paint ten (10) park-style benches and four (4) Adirondack chairs that will be installed in Downtown Calgary for Summer 2021. Each artist or artist team selected will be responsible for transforming two (2) benches or two (2) Adirondack chairs.

The only catch? Artists/artist teams must use the colour palette from our Spring/Summer 2021 pageantry for the majority of their creations (artist/artist teams will be allowed to use additional colours for accents and details). Please see below for colour details.

Deadline to apply: Sunday June 20, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MST.

Selected artists will be notified on Monday, June 21, 2021 by the Calgary Downtown Association team.

Honorarium: $1,250 for two benches or two chairs.

One (1) quart of each colour of paint in the palette, drop cloths, as well as a sealer to protect the artwork will be provided. Artists are responsible for any other supplies like paint brushes, painter's tape, rags, etc.

Submission requirements:

  • Artist name(s), pronoun(s) & contact information
  • Artist bio(s)
  • Artist headshot(s)
  • Links to previous work or website portfolio
  • A description or sketch of your proposed design using colours from our spring/summer pageantry (pitured below)
  • The artist(s) preference to paint either benches or Adirondack chairs.

Artists will have between June 22 and June 30, 2021 to paint and seal their benches or chairs, please consider this timeline when submitting your application. Painting will be completed at the Urban Productions warehouse (3613 Blackburn Road SE) or, if the artists are able, they may take the benches or chairs to their home studio to paint.

Please note: the benches will be primed white for painting.
