Downtown Calgary

HowdYYC: Meet Estelle Park

by Calgary Downtown Association

Estelle is an Urban Studies student at the University of Calgary and one of our Downtown Ambassadors working towards making our city more vibrant, inclusive & safe.

What drew you to the Downtown Ambassador position?

I'm finishing up my last semester of a B.A. in Urban Studies at the U of C. Throughout my studies, I've grown a deep interest in cities, the people who live in them, and how the design and social structures of cities can be improved to make cities more vibrant, inclusive, and safe. I was drawn to the position because it seemed like a tangible way to improve our city's downtown and bring a bit of light to our city's streets, especially during this strange time.

What do you look forward to the most about the Downtown Ambassador role?

I look forward to continuing to serve Calgary's downtown and hopefully continuing to see the long-term benefits of our program. I also look forward to building stronger connections with the social service organizations in our midst that do such important work.

Do you communicate in another language? If so, how do you say "howdy" or "hello"?

I do! I am proud to be the daughter of Korean immigrants. μ•ˆλ…•ν•˜μ„Έμš”

Who is the most influential person in your life?

The most influential person in my life is probably my older sister. Her and I have been through thick and through thin together and I'm blessed to have someone in my life who just 'gets me' like she does.

If you could say one thing to everyone in Calgary right now, what would you say?

I'd just encourage everyone and say that it's ok if you're not at your best, or your healthiest, or your most productive right now. This past year has been a challenging one and I think it's important to show yourself the same kindness and understanding you extend to others. Our city and its people are resilient.

What are you most afraid of right now?

I'm afraid of wasting my potential and living a life that is ordinary. I guess for myself, the challenge is always to balance my expectations for myself with that self-kindness I just mentioned. Definitely still a work in progress!

What inspires you?

I draw inspiration from many places, but lately I've been inspired by many of the conversations I've been having with the people in my life. I also often feel inspired during walks through my neighbourhood.

What is the happiest you've ever been?

I can't pinpoint a particular "happiest moment" of my life, but I think I feel happiest when I'm outside, in the sun, with the people I love.

What are you looking forward to in 2021?

I'm looking forward to this summer! Can't wait for sunnier days and getting a break from the snow.

What makes you laugh the most?

My two younger brothers are maybe the funniest people I know. They make me laugh every time I talk with them.

What is your favourite thing you can see out of your window?

I enjoy seeing birds and trees from my window. I often see dogs and their owners pass by my window, which I also enjoy.

What three things do you think of the most each day?

Probably thinking about my friends and family, my plans for the day, and mentally planning my next meal.

Is your glass half-full or half-empty?

I guess it depends on the day and what season of life I'm in. I definitely strive to see the glass half full, but I do indulge myself every once in a while and allow myself to see the glass half-empty. I just try my best not to dwell there too long!
