Backed into a corner by a bad deal with a big record label, Petty actually threatened to shelve his third album with the Heartbreakers. Lucky for us, the label settled and Damn the Torpedoes was released in 1979, eventually selling triple-platinum. Rolling Stone declared it the Tom Petty album “we’ve all been waiting for”. The album sat at number two on the Billboard albums chart for seven weeks, cementing it as one of the great records of the album rock era.
